I was on a search for free domain provider until very recently. I know there are lots of people skeptical about free domains and frankly, I too have very little idea if it is safe or good. But I have been using it for a while now and did not give me any problem.
I am neither working for any free domain providers nor deliberately trying to lure you all. I am just a part time blogger who couldn't effort a paid custom domain name and so didn't felt the need of it.

To set up your free domain name you will need:
1.Computer with the internet2.Google plus account or your Facebook account
HOW TO REGISTER YOUR DOMAIN?
To do this we are going to need your google plus or your Facebook account (i assume that you know either one of your google plus account or Facebook account ) as we need it to register our domain. To register a domain, first open a new tab in your browser and go to www.freenom.com where you should see something like this:
Freenom is a site where you can register free domain names, but unfortunately, we are restricted to ".tk" ".ml" ".ga" ".cf" ".gq" as they are free. If you want a top level domain like .com .net etc, you would have to pay for it.
Once you see get to this page you can directly register your domain here but I would recommend you to first go to the sign in page by clicking on the sign in on top right of the page.

Sign in using social sign in which is much easier and faster using one either your google plus or Facebook account.
you will be redirected to the client area:
Head over to the services, here you will find the necessary options like registering and renewing domains. and also viewing your domain status if you have registered multiple domains.
But as of now we will directly head over to Register a new domain.
As you can see, I am searching for mypassion. you can search for any domain name you like.
Now you can see that only two of them are available and rest are taken. If you are specifically looking for a domain like .tk and .ga, you can try checking again with a slight change in your domain name.
Here when I search for mine passion instead of mypassion I get all the option.
However for the sake of this tutorial I just went on with .ml by clicking on Get it now! and Check out!
Note: Don't be confused with 12 months @ free and 1 year @USD 9.95 this basically means that you don't completely own the domain name and if someone wants and chose to pay for the same domain as yours, you will lose that domain before 12 months.
In my case, if someone pays USD 9.95 for mypassion.ml he can literally steal my domain name.
Anyways let us pray that does not happen.
Now we will select 12 months @ free and continue

Head over Client area, Services like you did earlier and My domains to view your domain status.

For renewing your domain name, which can only be done before the expiry date.
Head over to Renew domains under Services
